Emma Wood State Beach

Ventura, CA.

Emma Wood State Beach is a no frills place to camp just north of Ventura, CA. There are 90 spots situated between the small road and the beach. This campground is similar to Rincon in terms of no water, services, restrooms, or any convienences whatsoever. The only real difference is the road at Rincon IS the highway, here it is only the private campground driveway. Also Rincon has chemical toilets and dumpsters, here there are only two of each. There IS a lifeguard tower here as well as a very nice beach most of the day. When the tide is high, it comes in right to your site, and into some sites. But when it goes low tide, it was about 200 feet from my site.

90 spots total. 84 to 90 parallel, large and dry. 71 to 83 angled and wet. 61 to 70, parallel with seawall, higher numbers, good width. 24 to 60, angled, higher numbers get smaller, lower numbers are wider. THE GOLDEN SPOT, spot 23 is all alone, big, dry, basically perfect. 20 and 21, parallel but very small seawall area. 18 and 19 are parallel, no seawall. 1 to 17 are angeled, no seawall.

Camp Comfort County Park

Camp Comfort
Ojai, CA.

Camp Comfort is a Ventura County Park,  http://www.venturaparks.org/  , 1 mile south of Ojai on the corner of Creek Rd. And Hermosa Rd. There is a small creek , (San Antonio creek)that runs through the park filled with crawdads and frogs which fill the nightime silence with ribbits and waterfall whitenoise.

There is a day use area that has a playground, picnic tables, charcoal grills, clean restrooms as well as rentable BBQ areas and a hall suitable for weddings, reunions, etc. There is a day use fee if you aren't camping. The campground has spotless restrooms amd showers, the camp hosts do a great job keeping this park clean. The cost is $40.00 per night. Quiet hours are from 9pm to 7am. There is also a very nice coin laundry room for campers only.

There are 15 full hook-up spots (20/30/50 amp) including cable. There is no dump station but all sites have a sewer hook-up. Tent camping is allowed. Spots 1, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14 & 15 are in the center of the loop with little to no privacy. These sites are good for groups. Site 5 has about 3 feet from your RV door to the side of the RV next to you, but it is a good tent site due to it's close proximity to the creek. Site 13 seems to be for motorhomes or tents only because the hook-ups are on the left side as you face it.
Now on to the Golden Spot , site 11.............this site is in the far back corner of the park facing away from all other campers. Next to the creek and a large open area, this spot is ideal for RV's and tents. There is plenty of overflow parking in the park.
The Ojai bike trail, link,  is 1/2 mile up Hermose Rd. and was built on an old railroad line so it never gets too steep. You can take it to downtown Ojai or if you have the time and energy, all the way to Ventura.

Pros:

  • Clean restrooms
  • Full hook-ups with cable
  • Good AT&T cell coverage
  • In nature close to town
  • Nice creek noise

Cons:

  • Sound travels all to good in here
